I was watching a video by Neil deGrasse Tyson, and I was curious about his chart. Tyson was born in Manhattan, New York, USA on 5 October 1958. The time given is 12:00, but this has a Rodden C rating as “unreliable”. <click here>
However, it seems this could be close. I will perform a rectification at a later date.
First off, Neil deGrasse Tyson is a Libra Sun. Libras are very personable people who like nice things and will try to be diplomatic. Many people think these Libran traits are contradictory to his personality, but Librans can be a bit snobby. But we will continue with further delineation.
Mercury is the mind and communication, and it is conjunct the Sun. Planets within 8° of the Sun are considered combust, suggesting that their power is weakened because they are being burnt up.
However, in his chart, Mercury is Cazimi or in the heart of the Sun. A planet is Cazimi if it is less than 17’ of orb. The combust nature turns from one of detriment to one of empowerment. Mercury now becomes powerful. As he has become a popular speaker and with Mercury Cazimi, it is easy to see why. If this approximate time is correct, that places the Sun and Mercury in his tenth house of career. The tenth house is also how one is seen in the world. If the time needs to be adjusted, then his birth time should be no later than noon. Virgo is about analysis and discernment. It can be a bit pedantic and expect perfection.
Once again, if this time is somewhat accurate, it gives Tyson a Sagittarius ascendant. I believe this is a good one for him. Sagittarius on the ascendant signifies a jovial person with a sense of idealism, in particular to knowledge and education. However, negative attributes can be a sense of self-righteousness and arrogance. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, is conjunct Neptune, increasing his sense of idealism in his beliefs. Neptune can also create a fog in one’s views and opinions on matters.
Saturn in the first house gives him a sense of hard work and to take things seriously, and Mars in the sixth means he puts a lot of effort into his work.
Carl Sagan Synastry
Looking at the synastry between Neil deGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan, Sagan’s Mercury/Jupiter conjunction is on Tyson’s Jupiter/Neptune, with the Mercury to Neptune being partile or 13’ apart. Tyson has Jupiter ruling his chart, which is conjunct Sagan’s Jupiter. This conjunction provides a strong connection between the two. Sagan wanted Tyson to study with him, but Tyson chose Harvard.
Chiron was a centaur who taught the gods, so he could be considered a teacher. Sagan’s Chiron, the teacher, is opposite Tyson’s ascendant, and being opposite means it is conjunct the seventh house cusp, which is the house of partners but also on who counsels you.
An interesting connection between the two men is one’s pre-natal solar eclipse is on the other’s Uranus. Uranus is a planet connected to science. It rules technology and can represent the eureka moment. Uranus is the higher vibration of Mercury, as Neptune is of Jupiter, and Pluto of Mars.
The solar eclipse point is a point of power for the individual, kind of like a destined path that can also focus on the person’s beliefs. Both individuals can get power from the other, from science (Uranus). Both have their south node pre-natal eclipses. For those who believe in reincarnation, these charts are karmically tied to the past. For those who don’t, then they have an innate ability to show their skills.
Both men have fourth house eclipses, suggesting they are/were working on family issues, understanding roots and deep psychological issues like where or why they are. Sagan’s eclipse is Leo, so he had to show this energy via being in the public eye. Tyson’s eclipse is in Aries, suggesting he will blast into the fray and attack those who oppose him. On the positive side, it gives him his passion, which can be taken as aggressive.
The given time of around noon seems to work for Tyson. Further rectification would be required to narrow down the birth time.
