Elements in Astrology
The different signs in astrology are divided into 4 classical elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. These were used to explain the world in ancient times and are still used today in a magical, metaphysical sense. The signs associated with the elements are 120° apart.
When we have people who represent one of these elements, it is not necessarily just their Sun sign but rather a distribution of all the planets, the Sun/Moon, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and their North Node. However, the sign will let you know what kind of energy they have.
Chart Analysis
The signs of Fire: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
Fire represents the realm of spirit or inspiration. You will find people who have an abundance of this element to be passionate, inspired, warm, or dramatic. They are idealistic because they believe they can take on any challenge since they are so dynamic. They have desire and will act. Fire, because it can be impatient, can rush into things. It can be arrogant and brash. If one lacks Fire in their chart, then the fiery emotions are hard to express. They have difficulty getting excited about things.
The signs of Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
Signs of Earth are associated with the body and enjoy the experience of the senses. Earth is very physical and therefore pragmatic. Earth is immovable, so that lends itself to being stubborn or rigid. You will find Earth people to be conservative because they prefer what is trustworthy. Earth has the tendency to be the one that sees a task through to the bitter end. Without much Earth in the chart, the individual can not pay attention to the material world. Oops, they forgot to eat or will lose things because it doesn’t matter to them.
The signs of Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
These signs tend to be associated with the mind or thinking. They like to analyze because they are logical and inquisitive. They like to learn and collect information, which tends make them very witty, communicative, and therefore, work well in social environments. However, there is an air of aloofness and superficiality, not in a bad way, but they skim the surface without going deep. A lack of Air in a chart can lead the individual to see the world in black and white, not being able to thread the logic.
The signs of Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
Water is the element of the soul and intuition. The gut feel is strong with water. It seems to be the knowledge from beyond. Like the depths of the ocean, it is secretive and subtle. The flow of Water makes one sensitive and, like the tides, moody. It is the element of the romantic. Water with no channel for the energy can lead to forgetfulness, chaotic behaviour and irrationality. No Water, the person can have trouble dealing with emotions, or not show them. They have trouble dealing with the non-physical/mental, leading them to feel impersonal.
A person can lack one of these elements, but like nature abhors a vacuum, the person can overcompensate for the missing element. A person with no Water can be overly emotional or lack of Air overanalyses things.
Remember, your Sun sign is only one point in the sky. So a Taurus (Earth) might have 5 planets or points in Water signs, meaning that despite being a practical and pragmatic Earth, the Water washes all that away, making him irrational, overly emotional, sensitive or/and intuitive.
